Today, as part of the opening of the 47th plenary session of the UN World Food Security Committee entitled "Making a Difference in Food Security and Nutrition", the Chairperson has announced Ukraine's accession to the World Food Security Committee (CFS).

The purpose of the CFS is to discuss ways to drive policy progress for improved food security and nutrition at the global level. This work is carried out against the background of official data, which showed a slow dynamic in the implementation by the world community of the goals of the Agenda for Sustainable Development until 2030, especially those relating to ending hunger and malnutrition in all its forms.

Among anticipated outcomes, first of all the Committee is expected to endorse “Voluntary Guidelines on Food Systems and Nutrition”. These guidelines will serve as a significant reference point in efforts to eradicate all forms of hunger and malnutrition.  The guidelines will also be an important contribution to the UN Food Systems Summit scheduled to take place in September this year. The Committee will also initiate work to develop new “Voluntary Guidelines on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment” as related to food security and nutrition.

The event is held between 8 and 11 February 2021 for the first time virtually.

Ukraine is already making a significant contribution to the food security of many countries and now intends to increase its contribution to development of food security and nutrition policy at the global level. Thus, according to the results of the 2019/2020 marketing year, Ukraine ranked the 1st in the world on export of sunflower oil, the 2nd - on export of barley, was among the four largest exporters of corn and among the five on export of wheat worldwide.

The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) - the foremost inclusive international and intergovernmental platform on food security and nutrition. At present it works to reverse the negative trends on SDG2 and mitigate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and other crises by developing policy guidance, recommendations and other tools on a wide range of pressing food security and nutrition issues. The CFS Secretariat is located at FAO Headquarters in Rome. The Committee reports to the UN General Assembly through the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and to FAO Conference. CFS was founded in 1974.
